The Electronic Fare Collection System is an information management system that is secure, fast and accurate. It provides pre-paid rides in the mass transportation system.
Smart cards are widely used for their ease of use and high security. istanbulkart is the contactless smart card introduced by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality for urban services and electronic ticket applications. It is up to the international standards for contactless smart cards (ISO 7816 and ISO 14443).
Work is underway to utilize “istanbulkart” as a loyalty card and a membership card in civic services, event ticketing, car parking, social aid identification and access control, e-health, electronic passport, electronic ticket, e-campus, etc.
The first step of the project was to transfer the conventional electronic fare collection system into the card system in addition to AKBİL.

Paying via Electronic Ticket
Depending on the content of the electronic ticket, various pricing scenarios can be applied.
• Prepaid Ride: Collection from the e-ticket based on the concerned tariff.
• Connection Ride: Optional discounted collection in which the connection that the e-ticket obtains after the prepaid right is valid.
• Subscribed Ride: Rides prepaid on a monthly, weekly or daily basis.
• Discounted Prepaid Ride: Collection from the student or teacher e-tickets based on the concerned tariff.
• Discounted Connection Ride: Optional discounted collection in which the connection that the student or teacher e-ticket obtains after the prepaid right is validated.
• Discounted Subscribed Ride: Rides prepaid on a monthly basis via student or teacher e-tickets.
• Free Ride: Rides via e-tickets granted by companies to their employees for free rides in public transportation.
• “Not Enough Credit”: Warning message displayed when the e-ticket doesn’t have enough credit for the ride.
• “False Ticket”: Counterfeit or suspected e-ticket that must be confiscated by the driver.
